BSA Troop 259 is a scout-led troop that is committed to the mission of preparing boys for the challenges they will face as men. Our program aims to accomplish this by fostering the development of leadership, teamwork, and communication skills; encouraging a strong sense of ethics; and challenging the boys to pursue excellence in all endeavors.
A Scout-Led Troop
Troop 259 is "Scout led". What this means is that the Scouts lead the troop meetings, campouts, outings, and events. The scouts are also responsible for the selection, planning, and organization of troop activities; as well as the maintenance of equipment. Through their responsibilities to the troop and their fellow scouts, the boys acquire leadership and critical communication skills. The adult leaders and committee members provide supervision, guidance, and logistical support. Parent participation (moms, as well as dads) is highly encouraged.
Meetings
Regular Troop meetings are conducted every Monday at 7pm, year-round, and are focused on rank advancement activities like first aid, knot-tying, camping skills, and physical fitness. Meetings that fall on the last Monday of the month are designated PLC (Patrol Leadership Council) meetings, which are focused on planning and other operational business of the troop. All scouts holding an official position in the troop are required to attend the PLC meetings. PLC meetings are optional for all other scouts.
Activities
Our troop is committed to maintaining a high activity level. We have regular camping and outdoor activities, with outings at least once per month. Weekend campouts, hikes, ball games, overnighters, and day trips are popular with the Scouts. Each summer, our troop attends at least one resident summer camp. Older Scouts will have the opportunity to go on "High Adventure Trips" including canoeing, rafting, and backpacking trips. Community service is encouraged and opportunities are abundant.
Advancement
Through the scouting program, each scout pursues rank advancement, which requires them to learn new skills in a variety of areas, including leadership, communication, outdoor skills, citizenship, conservation and first aid, to name a few. Our adult leadership actively encourages the scouts to stay on top of their advancement track, and provide opportunities for scouts to meet various rank andvancement requirements.
Sponsorship
Boy Scout Troop 259 is chartered by the Rattan Creek Homeowners Association. Facilities for our meetings and the storage of our equipment is graciously provided by Pond Springs Church of Christ.
