I sewed a Frostline 60/40 jacket back in the 70's, My brother made a sleeping bag

the Home Ec teacher at the same school where I taught let the boys sew Frostline down jackets and sleeping bags for class projects. what a blast from the past......thanks for some good memories.

I still have my frost line down jacket, vest and sleeping bag. The vest and sleeping just about went to Philmont last week with my son and daughter who are on a Cavalcade.

Terry Pogue I made a Frost Line down parka from a kit - still doing well. It doesn't have a zillion bells and whistles - some folks wonder how it works. Duh, keep it simple. Also made bags and stuff from the Alta kits. Also have a Wilderness Experience daypack; no padding, very simple. Great summit pack - almost impossible to find a day pack w/o all the crap on it. I might also buy a new gas stove if the 1972 Svea 123R ever quits working (no maintenance - ever).

And then there was Trailwise equipment fro The Ski Hut in Berkley, CA. That was Colin Fletchers favirite outlet since he lived nearby. Late 60's and I still have their ext frame pack. Still got and use a Gerry Yearound tent I bought in 1967.

I guess the old saying "you get what you pay for" applies here. Alps is reasonably-priced. It is not Columbia, not Mountain Hardware, not Lowe, etc. For many participants, all they need their backpacking gear to last is for the pre-trek activities, duration of the trek and occassional use after that. Scout Direct gives them an option to sacrifice some quality for price. I would suggest the same is true of Coleman (using the Scout discount). Not top of the line, but adequate in most aspects. I have a down zero degree Holubar (anyone remember Holubar?) sleeping bag that I got back in the early 1970's. It has been to Philmont twice. I've probably spent more than a year sleeping in it over the past 35 years and it still keeps on ticking. My folks paid a fortune for it back then (over $100, as I remember). So I would say you generally get what you pay for.... YIS.
