This is true, but amazingly, really good quality down is very resilent. That's the reason it is so expensive. Most of the down found today isn't quite up to the quality standard of the past. It can still be bought, but not for a nickle and dime.
A few years back use "down freaks" were chastized by the "modern tech freakiers". Well, I'm here to tell you, the down still works.
And on a similar subject, I think we have on list more people with a history of SVEA 123 stoves than ever before.
Using that stove to teach the principles of stover operation i what it's all about. There is no magic in stove operation, just some simple physics and chemistry with a little engineering thrown in.
I have several "how to repair an old Coleman stove" articles on Seldens list and daily get inquiries "how do I fix this old stove I got for $5 at a flea market".
If they had a Scout leader that taught stove principles, they would not have to ask. They'd just do it.

Clare,
Glad the down bag "revived", think you were lucky. In the future store the sleeping bag in a large cotton laundry type bag. It lets the down stay expanded and won't crush any down or quills.
