A Scout from one of the Mecklenburg County Council contingent crews was
taken off the trail last night and is in the hospital at Las Vegas (NM) with
internal injuries and suspected internal bleeding - no broken bones or
spinal or head injuries. He is a 17-year-old Eagle, a tall sturdy guy, was
their Crew Leader. He got run over by (a) burro(s) after falling down
during the burro races at Harlan Downs and was in severe pain and had
difficulty breathing. Doug Palmer himself made the pickup. They were on
Day 9 of Trek #32. The burro races at Harlan are always one of the
highlight program events that the kids love. They run up and down that
field at full tilt, usually pulling the burro, but sometimes being pulled BY
the burro. The burro wranglers always warn about being kicked, and I've had
that happen to one of my guys before. Has anyone ever heard of being
completely run over by a burro - not me. Tell your guys to be careful.
