Caroline-there is a thingy that you buy at REI that allows you to convert your regular sleeping Thermarest into a chair. It bends it into an L, with side straps. Kind of like a Crazy Creek chair, if you've ever seen one of those. Never seen it used, but the major drawback is that if you spill food on it, then you can't put your thermarest back into your tent to sleep upon for the rest of the trek. That's kinda dangerous, unless you REALLY like sleeping on the ground with no padding....
What my fellow advisors and myself did is to bring a piece of an old closed cell pad (think about 1 foot long) that we folded in half, making a pad about 1 foot by 1 foot. We called these our "butt pads" and brought them everywhere with us. Even to staff porches as extra padding on the wooden benches and swings. They weigh almost nothing, are easy to squeeze into your backpack somewhere, and make just a little bit of added comfort. They have no back, but usually our issue wasn't our back (you could lean up against a tree or log), but the rocks, dirt and pine cones digging into our sensitive rear-ends <g>! Also, if you were working on something, like a stove or a stubborn tent zipper, and needed to kneel, you could also kneel on the pad.
I guess the telling tale is that if we weren't sitting on them for some reason, the kids always hijacked them for their use, so they must have been successful. YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02, '04 and '07).

[Philmont] Pack Weight (was Dining Fly)
Hi!
I'm reviewing old emails, and yours was one I saved from back in April. I am really new to this...and am wondering how the thermarest chair works with the sleeping bag? Could you please explain? Thanks in advance!
