[Philmont] Rain on June 28

We were 627-O1, Trek 33 and at Sioux Camp on June 28th doing our Ranger
training. It was kind of a classic for those of us from Oregon, this was the
fourth Trek I've been on and the 3rd time it's started raining when we
started hiking. It was the first time the Ranger first demonstrated the
lighting position and then less then an hour later the Crew had to use it
for real.
It started with the thunder and lighting around 3:30, let off enough to let
us finish cooking and then rained all night. What was great about it was
being from Oregon it was almost like home for the boys and it knocked the
fire danger down a lot by the end of our Trek.
It also rained quite a lot on July 8th, the last day we were at Shaeffers
Pass. Our Crew went over to Miners Camp and made arrangements to Rock Climb
prior to hiking in to Base Camp, but we were told that if it rained past
3:00 am it would be to wet to climb. As it was pouring between 12 and 4:00
am we weren't able to do that, but we did eat breakfast on top of Shaeffers
Peak and then had lunch (around 10) on top of the Tooth. The Crew really
didn't want to go home. We hiked 130 miles and saw a lot of Philmont and did
a lot of programs. It really showed the Crew that doing great prep hikes
allowed them to do anything and have the energy to have fun when they got
there!
We were also chased down Tooth Ridge by a wonderful lighting and thunder
show, we were able to take our pictures at the "You Made It" gate and then
the rains chased us into the check in shelter. Then it really let loose,
there was water everywhere! It made for a great exit for the boys.
