[Philmont] Warm Showers and Tobasco Donkeys

Even as far back as 1959 resourceful Scouts got in the back of the line and benefitted from others "preheating" the donkey.  I know, because that's the year I discovered that trick.  It still works.

Burn bans at Philmont include EVERYTHING that is wood or charcoal, even the wood stoves in the staff cabins.  Sometimes they can get a waiver to operate the forges at Cyphers, but sometimes they can't and they get shut down also.

However, if I could manage a warm bath from a "steel pot" U S Army helmet, surely a resourceful Boy Scout leader can manage warm bath on the PhilTrail.

During the burn ban of 2002, I never utilized any showers on the trail yet had a warm bath every day.  My "bath tub" was the bottom half of a one gallon poly jug.  After the bath it served as my "washing machine".

If I can do it, surely others can do it.  Well, maybe and maybe not.It just depends on how much you want something as to whether you can manage it or not.  I like sleeping clean.  I've had to do that dirty enough to know the difference.

I¢m not sure, but the burn-ban might have had an impact; even though it is contained, it is still outdoors.  I think outdoor grills were included in the restrictions.  The ban was lifted the last day we were at Philmont.

Happy Trails

The trick with wood burning boilers is to take your shower later after the tank has heated up.  Only two off us took advantage of the showers at Sawmill on our arrival, after previous treks had stoked the boiler all day.  It was almost too hot.  The rest took freezing showers in the morning before starting out.  Brrrrr!!!

Thanks  - great info I am sharing with our crew. Hmm . . . 38 degree shower - think I'll just wait on that one . . .
