[Philmont] Boot question for 2009

As you have noted, Raichle makes a fine product. I would be concerned about the weight, however. I have seen a rule of thumb that one pound on the feet equals 9.5 pounds on the back. At 2.7 pounds EACH, given the number of steps you will have to take in eleven days, that may be a bit much.

Although Philmont trails are steep and rocky at times, in general they are constructed and maintained to a standard that is much higher than any we see here in the East, whether on the AT, or on the granite ridges of New Hampshire or Maine. Raichle's may be overkill for Philmont.

And then you have the issue of using a repaired set. On the plus side, they are well broken in, and Raichle's can be stubborn in that regard.

I'd go for a new, lighter weight boot. Save the tried and true Raichle's for hikes with less carried on your back.
