John knows that a Scout is resourceful....
In 2006 we had outbound crews commenting on how clean our homebound crew
was. We trained to be clean and we maintained that standard for the entire
trek. The best baths we had were in the Valle Vidal with ice cold water (Iris
Park and Whiteman Vega). Nothing like having a crew member pour water over you
to shampoo as the solar or windmill pump continued to provide the cleanest,
coldest water imaginable!
We used the bottom third of a gallon milk jug as a bath basin. My favorite
wash rag is a piece of chamois. It doesn't chaff and is tough enough to
scrub off the harshest of dirt, including all the ash and carbon from the Ponil
Complex Fire. You can use it in your tent and get a full body bath with no
Youth Protection issues. After the body bath it works great to make sure your
socks and undies are clean (i.e., read this to be salt free).
Take diaper pins with you to use as a portable clothesline. We pinned socks
and whatever to our packs to dry as we hiked the next morning. By lunch
they were dry and ready for that evening.
Cleanlinest is one of the best traits to maintain on the trail. It kept the
crew in high spirits and ready to conquer anything they wanted!
