From: Carol
The last time I went overnight backpacking, to my surprise, I had horrible
knee pain during the end of a 6-mile/day-one hike. I packed about 30lbs
(I'm 5'1, f, --early forties), and arrived at camp after a high elevation
steep hike up slippery granite rock steps adjascent to wet waterfalls -- the
last several hundred feet of which I was in mucho amounts of pain in my
right knee. Part of the problem was simply attempting to keep up with
over-eager, strong, and FAST Venture scouts without twisting an ankle in the
process.
When this happened to me (2001 - I was 45), it turned out to be a torn
meniscus in my knee. I was climbing Mt. San Gorgonio in Southern California
when it happened to me. It would come and go, climbing was usually worst,
and I could ride a bike with no pain. Took the doctor a few tries to find
it (MRI did the trick). Arthoscopic surgery, a couple weeks on the mend,
and I've been just fine since, putting in quite a few massive hikes since.
In fact, three months after the surgery, I did a rim to river and back in
the Grand Canyon with no pain.
I am quite glad I had it taken care of, living with it for six months was
NOT fun. Philmont trek three years ago was a piece of cake. Have been
careful to always use trekking poles ever since, though.
No idea if this is your problem, but your symptoms match mine.
Regards
Don Roberts
