When hiking sticks, collapsible pairs - not a wooden stick, first came out I thought they were just stuff for the equipment junkies. The first time I used them on an icy covered trail with full packs I was surprised that: I never fell and my knees weren't sore at all. Some claim that correct use of sticks takes much stress off the knees - seems to work for me.
I personally don't wear boots, they cause me to get sprained ankles and I've seen some notes about this subject on this before but I don't know how boots would help with knees.
