[Philmont] KNEE PAIN (am seeking non medical self-help advice)

Caroline,

There are a couple non-medical things that you can do.

1. Get yourself a quality pair of trekking poles to transfer some of
the knee shock to your upper body and improve balance on unsure footing.

2. Vitamin I (Ibuprofin - Motrin) will help reduce inflamation in the
joint - some before you start, some before you go to bed, some when you
get up in the morning.

3. On the trail, you can sleep with a water bottle filled with hot
water behind the leg at the knee joint to help ease the pain.

If you are still in pain a month later, I would go see my doctor and
get a referral to a quality orthopedist. You can sometimes damage the
meniscus or partially tear a ligament without direct trauma, but just
through exertion.

Delayed action only makes things worse. Trust me I do have some
experience here. :-(

Disclaimer: I am not a physician nor do I play one on TV.

Best of Luck,

Dave Gottshall
