That's what I'm banking on! I've dreamed about going to Philmont
my whole life. The last few years I've actually tried to get in.
Maybe 2012 will be our lucky year!

BTW, I will be 50 in 2010. I'm 20 lbs overweight, but well within
the limits. When I started using trekking poles four years ago
(due to a stressed ankle), I couldn't believe the difference!
Now I cannot imagine backpacking without them.

My first thought was to try and convince our Scouts to adopt
poles, but my wife quickly cautioned me that I should retain an
advantage. Sure enough, the young Scouts in our new troop got to
be 16, 17, and 18, and it sure was nice to have a secret weapon
to keep up with them! ;-)

P.S. -- I have four sons, and would love to take each of them to
Philmont. In 2012, my two middle sons will be 14 and 16. Alas,
I missed the chance with my oldest, who is now already 18 and out
of the house.

HOWEVER, there is still hope -- he's at the Air Force Academy,
and we've learned that sometimes USAFA cadets get to help out at
Philmont! So maybe he'll make it after all. Wouldn't it be extra
cool if he even got to do that the same summer we do?! (Although
I suppose it would be pretty hard to see each other.)
