[Philmont] KNEE PAIN (am seeking non medical self-help advice)

I second that about the horseback riding. Our last night in the backcountry
in 2003 was at Clark's Fork. I went horseback riding that day. I had done
some riding before, and the wrangler reminded us that riders should put about
60% of their weight on their legs, not all on the butt.

The next day we had to hike from Clark's Fork over Shafer's Pass, and along
Tooth Ridge toward base camp. There is a serious boulder field between
Shafer's Peak and the Tooth. Do not underestimate this boulder field. Lots of
pounding on the ankles, hips and knees. And I had good trekking poles.

The discomfort began before the Tooth, but once we began the downhill
switchbacks, the pain became unbearable. I was about three miles away from Base
Camp when my knees totally gave out. I could not stand up. No vehicle access up
there; a team of about 8 carried my scrawny self out on a litter on July 4.

I was out at PTC last fall for a conference, and went over to the Trading
Post. A fellow working there recalled that incident well; he was on medical
staff during the summer. And I finished the segment on Autumn Adventure with
Calvin and Mark in 2006.

My doctor says arthritic tendonitis. I am real careful these days. Lots of
Alleve.
