INteresting, that we worry about cutting "ounces" here and there, drilling holes in tootbrushes and sporks, ... and then when something cuts 10LBS!!! (20% of a 50 lb pack) off the load on the legs and back, they are referred to as “Wimp/Weenie/Wuss Wands”, “Pansy Poles” and “Sissy Sticks”.
Maybe backpack frames should be "fairy frames" and hip belts should be "Pansy Pads"? :-) Real Men backpack with Yucca Packs with out even shoulder strap pads or chest straps ...
Those who use Trekking poles will probably end up hiking quite a few years longer without knee pain, hip pain,... from the wear and tear of backpacking then those who wait to use them when they get "a little older or if he hurt a knee or something". By then it might be too late.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Why be sorer at the end of the day?
With that said, trekking poles do take some getting use to. You do have to exert downward pressure to lighten the load on the legs and back. They do little but add to the weight you are carrying if they are simply used for balance or lightly brush the ground with each step. Did Philmont in '00 without them; Used them intermittently in '06, but really felt they helped when I did use them. will probably use them more in '09 since I am "a little older". :-) Their only inconvinience was not having a ready hand on the camera for those Kodak moments.

Our Ranger referred to trekking poles as “Wimp/Weenie/Wuss Wands”, “Pansy Poles” and “Sissy Sticks”. He also indicated that he would probably use them when he got a little older or if he hurt a knee or something.
