Phil tents need 20 pegs. 10 for the tent and 10 more for the rain fly. I recommend using all 20 peg for the tent. The better you pitch and secure that tent, the better it will hold up to midnight rain and wind storms. sloppy loose tent walls and rain flys will result in your least experienced boy getting his sleeping bag wet (bad bad bad problem if it gets cold or doesn't stop raining.) you will also need 10 to 15 extra pegs for the dinning fly. therefore 12 peg for each crew member is probably the correct number.

Comment...

Never thought about it before, but the number of stakes has been 10 per person (20 per tent) in the Guidebook to Adventure for years, and that does not leave any extras for the dining fly if you fully stake out the tent with it's rainfly. It was enough for that in the late 90's with the former green Philtents which were smaller and had four fewer guylines.

But since few fully staked out the tent then or now - you can run six pairs of lines from the tent and fly to one stake each rather than two (four pairs with the old tents - I guess they decided not to change the number in the gear list when they went to the bigger tents.

My crew's have always used 8 stakes for the dining fly - 3 on each side, 2 for the ridgeline.

So 10 per person works with a couple extras, but it is not enough for you to run each line to it's own stake.

And in response to the original question, I've never seen a homebound crew give stakes to a trailbound one, and would not count on that happening. Bring your own.
