[philmont] Cell Phone Coveraage - Verizon Wireless

Sprint must be CDMA too. We have a cabin about 5 miles up the valley from
Red River which is close to Philmont. Through last summer we had no
coverage at the cabin and only an analog cell in Red River itself. This
past Christmas we were there and had very strong digital roam coverage at
the cabin. No way of knowing exactly whose signal it is but it sounds like
it may be Verizon's. We are at 9,300 feet just north of Wheeler Peak and 8
or 9 miles west of Baldy.

Doesn't work that way. ATT and Tmobile use GSM. Verizon is CDMA. The beauty
of standards is that there are so many to choose from!

Verizon must have put up a new tower or added hardware to an existing tower.

Last Summer, my wife and I were both at Philmont, she had a Verizon phone
and I had an AT&T phone. My AT&T phone would work at base camp, but her
Verizon phone would not.

Perhaps the different cell phone companies have reached some agreement on
sharing a cell tower.
