I've always been a little envious, but not jealous, of the Scouters who have been fortunate to do multiple treks at Philmont, especially considering family responsibilities, vacation time, expense, physical condition, etc. I had such a fantastic and rewarding experience on my one and only trek in 2005 that I don't know how another trip to Philmont would compare to the first time.
In 2005, I was part of a great council contingent crew of young men from all over our council. In my opinion, they were an all-star group. At least four have reached Eagle and a few more are close. One participated in Rayado last summer and another is going to Rayado this year. I was asked to write letters of recommendation for the two Rayado participants and, obviously, both were accepted. Topping everything that I just typed was the fact I got to experience Philmont with my son, Kyle. It just doesn't get any better. When we reached the top of Mt. Phillips, the emotion flowed out of me like almost never before. What a special moment.
Getting to go again is a very strong possibility for me in 2010. This time around will be as a Venturing Crew Advisor. I can only imagine that Philmont will touch me as much then as it did in 2005, but it will be tough. What will be fun will be seeing an entirely new group of young people live the experience that Philmont provides.
Getting to go to Philmont one time or getting to go several times is all about being in the right place at the right time and having the wherewithall to be able to do it. Enjoy your trek in 2009. Live, eat, sleep, study, read, surf, train and talk Philmont all you can between now and then. Your experience will be something you remember for the rest of your life.
Good luck.
