Mark has made a wonderful post. I hope someday he will be in the
Pittsburgh PA area. If he is I hope to meet him to be able to shake
his hand.
I was fortunate to go to Philmont as an Explorer Scout, from an Explorer
Post that specialised in high adventure.
It's been said Philmont is a mountain top experience, the summit of
Scouting.
I certainly found that to be the case in 1965. I was literally stunned
at the high calibre of Scouts, Scouters and staff. I had never done
a trip quite like a Philmont trek before. It was a real challenge and
we were triumphant at the end at the "We All Made It" sign. The
crew I was a member of was a Middle Tennessee Council contingent
and I got to meet a lot of great guys who quickly worked together as
a team.
In 1978 I was honored to be selected as an Advisor to a Council
Contingent out of the Sam Houston Area Council. I have the Philmont
group photo of Expedition 805 M2 framed on my bookshelf. It brings
back wonderful memories as a Scoutmaster taking some of my Scouts and others
from elsewhere in the Council to Philmont. The Crew Leader the Scouts
elected had been on a Rayado Trek and he did an outstanding job. The
experience of seeing Dan Beard camp in full greenery is an especially
happy memory. Uncle Dan Beard would be pleased to have such a camp
named after him.
It has been a real blessing in my life to have been involved in Boy
Scouting.
I hope everyone on the list will have the same great blessings
I have received and enjoyed through Scouting.
