[Philmont] One mans opinion

Once again john, you speak about things which you just don't get...

I'm 41. I was a Scout back in the early to mid 80's.

Back in those times, we could call Philmont in May and show up in June. Philmont was not full. While I was in the Troop we had THREE adult leaders for an entire Troop of boys. Was my Scoutmaster just supposed to let us go out with no adult along? He ran his own business so he could get away when other adults had to work. Remember the times back then - recession, interest rates through the roof. We were lucky to have any adult that could afford to take boys to the ranch.

On all four of my trips as an adult, I have yet to keep a youth from going by going myself.

Get off the high horse John. I was paying respect to my Scoutmaster - nothing more. And if you didn't yearn to experience Philmont over and over, you wouldn't spout your closed-minded nonsense here so much. You'd find something else to do with your precious time. Surely there are leather shoes to re-sole or wooden pack boards that need a little spruce up. I used to enjoy reading some of your missives, but you have become a fount of "I'm great because I believe this, and if you don't, well you just aren't very Scout-like are you?"

I apologize to the rest of the list, but John's story has become tiresome to me...

I think some people get confused.

Success is not how many times you repeat the same task but how you make the journey through life.

Collecting Philmont Arrowheads is not the same as collecting Cub Scout Arrowheads.

With the long waiting lists with people, especially youth, on those lists who will never get a chance to hike the trails, how on earth can an adult feel good about themselves for going on a trek to Philmont 21 time?

Yeah, yeah I know.....he toold boys to Philont on all those trips. Well, did you ever stop to think that it might be nice to let another adult experience the trails of Philmont also? Then it can stimulate those adults to help others succeed too. Spread the joy, don't hide the candlelight under a bushel. Sound familiar?

Maybe we are cut from a different bolt of cloth, but I just don't see the purpose of your patting yourself on the back for going to Philmot so many times when others yearn for just one chance and never get it.

Philmont is for the youth, not the adult repeat performers running a broken record.

This is my personal view on the subject and don't even try to pursuade me to look at it differently. A man who knocks a youth out of the opportunity isn't much of a man at all in my way of thinking.

Philmont should be a stepping stone for a lifetime of adventure, not a destination to repeat yearly.

Go hike the Applachian Trail or Colorard Trail or Pacific Crest Trail or any of a million others if you want adventure and give the young people of the world a chance to earn the arrowhead just like Wait Phillips intended.
