I have to echo most of Steve's comments below.
I have only been on one Philmont trek ('07) and Sid Covington was an
invaluable help to me in getting me and my crew interested in and prepared
for Philmont. I even had the chance to have breakfast with Sid one day
while in Austin for a business meeting...that's the kind of guy he is...he
took time from his very busy business schedule to talk with another Scouter
about Philmont. I appreciate Sid's willingness to help me and I consider him
a good friend.....having met him on this very same list. To me, Sid embodies
A Scout is Friends, Helpful, Courteous, Kind....heck just about the whole
dang law!
>From my experience, Philmont does something to you, especially as an adult,
and you want to return. Yes, I would like to return to Philmont like many
on this list and have dedicated myself to helping our crews' and advisers
prepare themselves for Philmont.
My dream today is that someday when I retire and if I have the resources,
that I would like to spend the summer working on staff at Philmont. Partly
because Philmont is Scouting's paradise, but mostly because of the
excitement you see in Scouts and Scouter when they are at "the ranch."
I have consider a PTC course, and while I am sure the training would
excellent, it wouldn't hold a candle to be "at Philmont."
I do hope members will continue to respect and uphold the Scout Oath and Law
and will continue to embrace Scout Spirit on this list.

John,
I have been on this list for many years and have gleaned some great
information from the elder statesmen of the group.
The best information I ever received was from Sid Covington. Unfortunately,
I don't believe he is on the list anymore due to the self appointed experts
that take every chance to pontificate about how they went to Philmont back
in 1908 (or when ever) when men were men.
As you gather around this virtual campfire with fellow Scouts and Scouters,
do your best to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind,
obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

Shane,
There are many ways to look at it Shane. Many ways. Yours is one. Mine is
another. I respect your right to yorus. You should, but don't, respect my
right to mine.
I did get it Shane. More than you might ever know.
Know what else? Since you sent your reply to the list and cc to me, I got
it twice. The same thing, word for word. But know what else? I didn't
read it twice, so you wasted your precious time you could have been planing
your 21st trip to Philmont with, but I certainly did not waste mine.
I don't have a high horse. My horse lies down for me to get on. That's
something you will value in later years maybe, but you gotta train the horse
to do that, it's not automatic.
Scouts and Scouters going to Philmont are numbers. Mathmatics is numbers.
I can do the math. It's just add and subtract anyway.
And if going 21 times is important to you, I hope you make it. If your
going on trek number 21 knocks out another Scout from going, I hope you
don't make it.
It's really a pretty simple concept. Even I got it.
