Scott,
You are going to get a lot of answers and as usual, the crew will have to
make final decisions. For what it's worth here are my short "opinions":
>1) 150' of rope - use Philmonts' or bring your own? If your own - any
recommendations? What is this for?
Use your own, bring parachute cord. It's for utility: tying down tents,
hanging clothes (Do NOT tie to trees), holding up the tarp, etc.
>2) Bear bags - use Philmonts' or bring your own? We have one bear canister
and I have a light-weight BB from BPL. Is it worth getting >something else?
Use Philmonts. They are light and do the job just fine.
>3) Bugs - our trek is July 21. Ticks/Flys/Chiggers/Mosquitos? What's
there?
You mileage will vary on this, but I would say carry a few small tubes for
the crew and share. I never used mine, but...
>4) Water purifiers/filters - are they needed? We are going on trek #28
which goes into Valle Vidal. How much filtering is done?
I would say "yes", but others will have a different position. I have never
been in the Valle
>5) Cat holes - is there a need to dig these or are there facilities along
the trail to avoid digging? For digging is the "standard" orange potty
trowel sufficient or is the soil there harder?
One small plastic trowel per crew should do the trick. You will receive
instructions on the proper protocol for this. We used it a few times, I
would not leave it home.
Have a great Trek,
Tom

Subject: [Philmont] Advisor Questions
We are having one of our last advisor meetings and some questions are
popping up - imagine that!
So here are a couple of ours:
1) 150' of rope - use Philmonts' or bring your own? If your own - any
recommendations? What is this for?
2) Bear bags - use Philmonts' or bring your own? We have one bear canister
and I have a light-weight BB from BPL. Is it worth getting something else?
3) Bugs - our trek is July 21. Ticks/Flys/Chiggers/Mosquitos? What's
there?
4) Water purifiers/filters - are they needed? We are going on trek #28
which goes into Valle Vidal. How much filtering is done?
5) Cat holes - is there a need to dig these or are there facilities along
the trail to avoid digging? For digging is the "standard" orange potty
trowel suffucient or is the soil there harder?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
