[Philmont] Advisor Questions

Great advice.? One interesting story concerning catholes.? There will be a time that you are on the trail when Mother Nature decides to roll the dice and someone is going to need a cathole.? It happened to me.? Without getting too graphic, I guess my morning coffee and the strenous hiking after breakfast got things moving ... quickly.? I grabbed the orange plastic shovel and began to frantically dig my private cathole.? Unfortunately, during mid dig, the handle broke off in my hand.? Since then, I have invested in a U-Digit,?a lightweight steel?trowel with a folding handle.? You may want to invest in one for?your crew.

ROPE - if you use the Philmont rope you can get it replaced on the trail if it gets stuck (been there)

?

Bear bags are generic, if you bring at least one of your own and it different looking that everyone else's it makes it easier to pick yours from everyone else's first thing in the morning while its still dark, we never tried this, may this time (going in 2 weeks)

?

Bug problems?are a relative term.? I have been when the list members were reporting "bad" bugs and we didn't find that to be the case.? Being from Michigan bad bugs are "bad" bugs, if your local surrounds are mostly bug free then you may have some other opinion.? You can always not take the bug repellent on the trail if you bring it (also been there)

?

PURIFIER/FILTER - Went to Valle last trip, have never taken a filter and never wished we had one (4 prior trips).? Its just extra weight.

?

CAT HOLES - if I remember correctly we needed to use the orange trowel many times on that trip.? I have taken the same trowel every time and haven't worn it out yet.? You can always find a place to dig.? The are cheap, take 2-3 if you are worried about breaking it.

?

now, I have a question, what written materials are folks handing out at their final crew meetings?

Subject: [Philmont] Advisor Questions

We are having one of our last advisor meetings and some questions are popping up - imagine that!

?

So here are a couple of ours:

?

1) 150' of rope - use Philmonts' or bring your own?? If your own - any recommendations?? What is this for?

?

2) Bear bags - use Philmonts' or bring your own?? We have one bear canister and I have a light-weight BB from BPL.? Is it worth getting something else?

?

3) Bugs - our trek is July 21.? Ticks/Flys/Chiggers/Mosquitos?? What's there?

?

4) Water purifiers/filters - are they needed?? We are going on trek #28 which goes into Valle Vidal.? How much filtering is done?

?

5) Cat holes - is there a need to dig these or are there facilities along the trail to avoid digging?? For digging is the "standard" orange potty trowel suffucient or is the soil there harder?

?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
