 Subject: [Philmont] Advisor Questions

We are having one of our last advisor meetings and some questions are
popping up - imagine that!

So here are a couple of ours:

1) 150' of rope - use Philmonts' or bring your own? If your own - any
recommendations? What is this for?

This is lightweight stuff; no more than 3/16" for rigging the tarp, clothes
lines etc. Two 50' and two 25' sections is what we use.

 2) Bear bags - use Philmonts' or bring your own? We have one bear canister
and I have a light-weight BB from BPL. Is it worth getting something else?

Since you will have to hang the canisters anyway, why bother. Just use the
Philmont provided bear bags. Having a crew OOPs bag that is distinctive is
useful for ID'ing your collection of bags and it also makes a nice stuff
sack for the ropes etc. that Philmont will provide. Going into the Valle,
you will get three bear bag ropes and rig your own bear cables; there are
none in the Valle

3) Bugs - our trek is July 21. Ticks/Flys/Chiggers/Mosquitos? What's
there?

Depends on conditions; flies and mosquitoes mostly.

4) Water purifiers/filters - are they needed? We are going on trek #28
which goes into Valle Vidal. How much filtering is done?

Really your call. Some take 'em, some don't, some take 'em but don't use
them. There will be opportunities to use them on 28.

5) Cat holes - is there a need to dig these or are there facilities along
the trail to avoid digging? For digging is the "standard" orange potty
trowel suffucient or is the soil there harder?

Orange potty trowel or equivalent (Coop's U-Dig-It etc.). There are no
established latrines in most of the Valle especially Greenwood Canyon.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
