[Philmont] Advisor Questions

1 - We carry 550# test parachute cord and a short length of 3/8" climbing
rope (for tying to trees). We connect the two types of rope with
mini-bineers.

2 - We carry our own custom made bear bags - waterproof with draw-string
closures and carabineer loops for attaching to the bear ropes

3 - 4 oz of DEET is light. 4oz is too much for a whole crew. It is crew
gear, not personal gear. Carry it.

4 - I've taken my filter to base camp on my 2000, 2002, & 2005 trips. It
never got packed in our crew gear for the trail - water was ample for our
trip. I'll pack it for our trip in 7 days. Water will probably be ample
and it will probably stay in base camp.

HINT - Go into logistics sometime during the afternoon of your DAY 1 with
your digital camera and take a good picture of each of the 4 water boards.
That way you have water information for the entire ranch. You could get
lost.

5 - You will dig. The shovel is not a poop-mover. Make sure everyone
understands that. God gave us fallen sticks for that. Enough said.

Subject: [Philmont] Advisor Questions

We are having one of our last advisor meetings and some questions are
popping up - imagine that!

So here are a couple of ours:

1) 150' of rope - use Philmonts' or bring your own? If your own - any
recommendations? What is this for?

2) Bear bags - use Philmonts' or bring your own? We have one bear canister
and I have a light-weight BB from BPL. Is it worth getting something else?

3) Bugs - our trek is July 21. Ticks/Flys/Chiggers/Mosquitos? What's
there?

4) Water purifiers/filters - are they needed? We are going on trek #28
which goes into Valle Vidal. How much filtering is done?

5) Cat holes - is there a need to dig these or are there facilities along
the trail to avoid digging? For digging is the "standard" orange potty
trowel suffucient or is the soil there harder?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
