Susan, I did 2 Philmont trips with a Nikon Coolpix 4600. Uses 2 AA batteries (I use Lithium batteries and they work great. I think the Coolpix camera is up to 7600 or 8600 by now.)
I did switch to a Fujifilm FinePix S700 before my trip to Glacier National Park last summer as I wanted something with more optical zoom. It is also a great camera and takes very clear photo's. The downside is that it uses 4 AA batteries instead of 2.
Both use SD memory cards. I use multiple 512 or 1 g cards as I have seen cards go bad in the past and would prefer all my pictures not to be on 1 2 G card. I took about 2000 pictures each trip.
I prefer AA cameras over the specialty batteries as they are readily replaceable if needed. You will not find any places to recharge the others at camp. With the Nikon I carried 4 sets of batteries plus the ones in the camera and I used 2 sets. (Also, I use the LCD screen all the time - if you turn it off you will get much longer battery life)
The second year I tried the recharable AA longlife camera batteries and a solar recharger. Unfortunately they never did recharge. I had even attached it to the top of my pack while hiking but we were never in the sun enough for them to recharge
Hope some of this helps with your decision

I'm looking for a great backpacking camera for my husband to take to Philmont - and with Dad's Day just around the corner. . seems like a good idea.. Any suggestions?
and has anyone found a good lightweight solar battery charger for AA batteries?
