[philmont] Backpacking Camera ?

You'll get opinions all over the board. My criteria for a digital to
take to Philmont are:

AA batteries (lithium AAs last longer and weigh almost half what
alkalines weigh)

SD card (so I can use the many I have)

Optical zoom (I hate digital zoom)

In 2006, I shot about 700 pictures (6 megapixel camera, 1 gb sd card) on
two sets of lithium batteries (the first set lasted until day 8).

Unfortunately, I'm hard on cameras. This year's is a Canon 8 megapixel
with a 2 gb sd card (900 pix capacity) and a 10x optical zoom. A bit
heaver than the 2006 camera (Kodak EZsomething as described above).

Hope he has a great trek.

I'm looking for a great backpacking camera for my husband to take to
Philmont - and with Dad's Day just around the corner. . seems like a
good idea.. Any suggestions?

and has anyone found a good lightweight solar battery charger for AA
batteries?
