For Christmas I bought myself a Kodal Easyshare V610 because of the 10x
optical, 4x digital zoom with automatic panoramic shot stitching for $400.
It seemed pretty small at 4.5 x 2.2 x 0.9 in. Unfortunately, it took so
long to focus and capture that I missed many action shots. Many times - up
to half of action shots - came out blurry. It takes a proprietary lithium
battery. At 4.5 in, it was a little too long to fit in many places. On the
good side, it takes wonderful video. It has very effective modes for
shooting indoors.
My daughter was happier with the Canon Powershot SD600 Digital Elph, so I
borrowed it for a weekend. Only 3x optical zoom, but much smaller at 3.4 x
2.9 x 0.9 in - fits almost anywhere. Focus and capture rate was very fast.
It has a viewfinder ! ! ! Very important on top of Baldy and other very
bright places. It takes a proprietary lithium battery. Very bad video.
I gave the Kodak to my son, and bought myself a Canon for $200. I was very
pleased with it at Philmont. Single battery lasted until day 10, but I
brought a spare (.1 oz). Wished I had a 2GB card instead of a 1GB. My son
used the Kodak at Philmont. The 40x total zoom got some very nice wildlife
shots. Likewise, the still shots of scenery were spectacular! Panorama
works MUCH better than on the Canon. He only used the one battery the whole
time. Together we took 1200 shots.
