[philmont] Common sense

From: John LeBlanc <philmontjohn@yahoo.com>

There has been an insinuation by the California twister that I suggest NOT eating dehydrated corn. Not so. What I stated is exactly what Mike Kruk states below only he terms it "common sense". What is "common sense" to a physician is not necessarily "common sense" to many other members of the human race not trained in the finer aspects of human physiology.

Back to my original comment, I suggested one be cognizant of the balance of dry vs liquid fuel intake. No more, no less. The absense or presence of Mike's stated "common sense" is the crux of the matter.

Common sense to one may not be common sense to another.

Well, as a physician,...

The stomach produces 1-2 liters of acid a day for digestion. So the dehydrated corn will be rehydrated to the extent needed for digestion. True total body dehydration does not occur, since everything going downstream pretty much gets reabsorbed due to the efficiency of the colon to remove liguid. So there is minimal net loss of fluid during the process, and certainly no net gain with freezed dried corn.

You still just need the common sense fluid replacement you would normally take in to prevent dehydration and altitude sickness on the trail.

So crunch away on the corn if it suits you!

Well, as a biologist, I'll give you the shortened version of putting things into the stomach, both liquid and solid. when there is a demand for water/liquid to dilute the contents, it takes it from the bloodstream. so, without replacement, this condition is called dehydration. It's really a pretty simple and straight forward concept to understand.

Most food products we consume contain a large amount of water. for example, take the human body. It contains 85% water. If we eat a human that weighs 100 lbs, we get 15 pounds of dry stuff and 85 pounds of water which is 85 pints of water.

If you eat freeze dried corn which contains less than .5% water, then how much water do you get by eating the corn? Now is it coming into focus?

Eating dry dehydrated corn is akin to eating bits of a sponge or in a more classical sense drinking concentrated Gatorade. The body will give up water from the blood to dilute the stomach contents to the proper dilution for efficient digestion and absorption to occur.

So if you are still wondering if it's true, well look on the Internet and see if you find it. If you do, then it's bound to be true. Right?

>>When they do this, make sure they drink LOTS of water.or risk dehydration from the corn literally sucking the moisture to rehydrate it.

At first read this makes sense, but then I thought about it and wondered it it were true. (not to pick a fight). Wouldn;t the stomack acid start breaking down the corn without rehydrating.

BTW, there was only enough to go araound and give everyone a small taste.
