I went to PTC in 2002 for James West Fellowship week. For our
class, we rode around in the PTC Suburbans to *all* the staffed
camps south of the Valle. That was cool.
Anyway, the radio for Philmont was on while we were riding around.
*EVERY* *DAY* *EVERY* *HOUR* we heard reports of injuries on the
trail and the EMT's heading to get to/take off/treat the crew member
involved. It sounded like 99 of 100 were advisors, not youth.
With 30 crews hitting the trail daily, on any given day there
are 12*30*10 (12 day trek, 30 crews per day, 10 average per crew,
or about 3600 persons) in the back country. Of those, about 500
or so are adults.
With that many people, and with adults being the prime candidates
for injuries (most were minor, scrapes and twisted ankles), is
it any wonder that Philmont takes their limitations seriously?
