Actually, if you read all of my post, you would see that the youth protection question is NOT answered. In the case you describe, I would have the 19 year old tent alone. He can still be counted as either a youth or an adult for Philmont trek (roster) purposes. In other words, if you have too many adults, he can fill a youth slot, or if you don't have enough adults, he can fill an adult slot. I did NOT say that Philmont allows you to break YPT as far as tent arrangements go.

Thank you to all for the comments, this has been an interesting thread... I have a followup...
How about the scenario where you have 2 adults (over 21) and 10 scouts, ALL UNRELATED (no related adults and youth), where one of the youth is 19. What happens then?
It seems to me that YPT applies here and the 19 yr old cannot tent with a 17 or 16 yr old. However, Andre, what I hear you saying is that Philmont allows this "exception" and allows the breaking of the YPT policy? yes?
I look forward to someones reply & YIS - Eric

Philmont will allow you to count them as youth or adults (for trek purposes only) regardless of whether they are scouts or ventures, between 18 and 21. This does not answer the youth protection question. I solved it last year by letting my 18 year old son tent with his 16 year old brother. But that can cause other issues....

Great question, we are going next year with a mix of venturers and boy scouts. Having the age differences for youth does change things. If you register as a venture crew, they are considered youth until age 21, but not as boy scouts, correct?

Subject: [philmont] Youth Protection Question
We have an all male crew going to Philmont next week. The trek was awarded to the troop but the youth are made up of Boy Scouts and Venturers. For a long time we only had one adult over 21 going so we were going to use a boy who recently turned 18 as the other adult. Now we have another real adult going with them and the 18 year old wants to tent with one of his buddies who is not quiet 18.
My first question is can the 18 year old tent with his friend.
My second question is were we okay under our original scenario with Venturers in the mix?
Thanks,
Bill Summers
