I remember Holubar...and Gerry. Those were the two gear manufacturers that
I remember from the late 60s to early 70s.

I guess the old saying "you get what you pay for" applies here. Alps is
reasonably-priced. It is not Columbia, not Mountain Hardware, not Lowe,
etc. For many participants, all they need their backpacking gear to last is
for the pre-trek activities, duration of the trek and occassional use after
that. Scout Direct gives them an option to sacrifice some quality for
price. I would suggest the same is true of Coleman (using the Scout
discount). Not top of the line, but adequate in most aspects. I have a
down zero degree Holubar (anyone remember Holubar?) sleeping bag that I got
back in the early 1970's. It has been to Philmont twice. I've probably
spent more than a year sleeping in it over the past 35 years and it still
keeps on ticking. My folks paid a fortune for it back then (over $100, as I
remember). So I would say you generally get what you pay for.... YIS.
